Why age a beer in casks?
Time in oak casks gives the beer woody notes, as well as aromas inherited from what the cask previously held, in this case wine. Slow ageing also rounds out the flavours, which explains the aromatic complexity of Val-Dieu Excellence.
How to enjoy Val-Dieu Excellence Côte-Rôtie?
As a sipping beer: between 10 and 14 °C, as the brewery recommends, rather than ice-cold, in a stemmed glass or a balloon glass to let the aromas of ripe fruit and wood come through.
It is lovely to share at the end of a meal, with a matured cheese or a fruit dessert.
A collector’s bottle
The cuvées in the Excellence range are produced in limited, numbered editions. Val-Dieu Excellence Côte-Rôtie will appeal to collectors and lovers of barrel-aged beers, and makes a remarkable gift for a Belgian beer enthusiast.
The Brasserie de l’Abbaye du Val-Dieu
The Abbey of Val-Dieu was founded in 1216 by monks from Hocht, near Maastricht. It stands in Aubel, in the heart of the Pays de Herve (Herve region). Val-Dieu beers are brewed there at the abbey itself and bottle-conditioned. More information on the official website of the Abbey of Val-Dieu (in French).
The Val-Dieu range at a glance
- Val-Dieu Hop: hoppy blonde, 5.5%
- Val-Dieu Blonde: fresh, light blonde, 6%
- Val-Dieu de Noël: amber seasonal beer, 7%
- Val-Dieu Brune: dubbel-style dark beer, 8%
- Val-Dieu Triple: blonde triple, 9%
- Val-Dieu Grand Cru: quadrupel, 10.5%
What is a bottle-conditioned beer?
After the first fermentation in the tank, a small amount of yeast and sugar is added at bottling. A second fermentation then takes place in the bottle: it creates a natural sparkle and leaves a light yeast sediment at the bottom. The beer thus continues to develop over time.
