Description
The Charlier syrup 450 g is an artisanal syrup made from local pears and apples, cooked over a wood fire by Siroperie Charlier, with no added sugar. The 450 g jar is the most versatile size: big enough for the whole family’s breakfasts, small enough to be finished while it is still nice and fresh.
Charlier syrup 450 g: made the traditional way
The “Fabrication à l’ancienne” (traditionally made) label sums up the syrup maker’s approach: pears and apples, long cooking over a wood fire, and nothing else. The syrup’s sweetness comes solely from the sugars naturally present in the fruit.
Charlier syrup 450 g: format and packaging
Packaging: 450 g jar with transparent lid, “Fabrication à l’ancienne” label. Charlier syrup 450 g should be kept closed, in a dry, temperate place; it does not need to go in the fridge, where it would become firmer and less easy to spread.

Siroperie Charlier and wood-fire cooking
Siroperie Charlier, in Henri-Chapelle, is one of the last producers still using traditional wood-fire cooking. The work is much more demanding, but this cooking method gives the syrup an authentic taste, different from other products.
Only pears and apples
Charlier Syrup is a 100% natural product, made from local pears and apples, with no other additives whatsoever: no added sugar, no gelatine, no pectin, and no fruit other than apple and pear in the vats.
How to use this pear and apple syrup?
- At breakfast: on a slice of brown bread, a rusk, a crêpe or a waffle.
- With cheese: pear and apple syrup is traditionally served with Herve cheese, a typical pairing of the Pays de Herve (Herve region).
- In cooking: it gives roundness to the sauce for boulets à la liégeoise (Liège-style meatballs; recipe in French), a carbonnade, a marinade or a vinaigrette.
- In baking: in a tart, gingerbread or plain yoghurt.

Compare with the other syrups in our range
At Chez Popol, each syrup maker has its own character. Nyssen artisanal syrup, from Aubel, is reduced over a high heat from cooked pears and apples, with no added sugar. Thomsin artisanal syrup is cooked in copper vats over wood and coal fires. Meurens Vrai Sirop de Liège, for its part, combines pears, apples and dates with added sugar.
Sirop de Liège, Aubel syrup or pear syrup?
These names refer to the same family of products: a thick, almost black syrup obtained by cooking fruit, pressing it and then slowly reducing the juice. People speak of Sirop de Liège (Liège syrup) in reference to the region, and of Aubel syrup or Pays de Herve syrup to refer to the local syrup makers. Each producer keeps its own recipe, choice of fruit and cooking method, which explains the differences in taste, colour and texture from one syrup to another.
